Two Dreams

It was a warm summer night.
In the garden it was
totally dark.
A few bats flew
between the trees and some night birds
were singing.
It has rained the day before
so the garden of
Mark's and Deena's house
was filled up
with a marvellous sweet smell.
There was no wind
and not a sound
to be heard,
as they lived
in the countryside
far away from
the noisy city.
It was dark in the children's room, too.
They were sleeping
and dreaming.
Mark dreamt
that he had stolen money
from a bank
and other naughty and illegal things.
He was talking to the police
and questioned by them.
They were so angry,
that he wept and admitted everything,
even things he did not remember
he had done.
Deena dreamt
that she was sitting
on a horse
on her way into the city,
where she was going to be
crowned as queen of the land.
Her father had died suddenly,
and she wondered
why she could be in grief
and simultaneously be happy.
People along the street greeted her,
as they considered her
warm hearted and good,
as she took part in charity work
for children in poor countries.
Mark was sentenced to death
and was to be beheaded instantly.
He saw the axe,
which was going to kill him
in a few moments
and saw people on the square
clap their hands
because he was finally caught.
In the moment,
where the crown was to be put
on Deena's head,
Mark woke up with a scream.
Deena got scared and angry:
"You spoilt my dream.
I was going to be a queen.
You stopped the dream!"
"You should be happy,
that you didn't have
the nightmare I had.
I was going to be beheaded.
It was terrible."
He cried a little
and dried his eyes
in the pillow."
They sat for a while,
until Deena said,
"Why do we dream?
I think that animals and trees dream like we do."
"Or the whole globe,"
Mark said,
feeling a little better.
"I think that your dream showed you
a good and wonderful world,
and that my dream showed me the opposite."
"But how can we dream so different dreams
at the same time
in the same room?"
"Because we are different people.
Dreams show us both sides
of Life.
Our mind produces the dreams."
"Or God does.
I think he puts them
into our heads."
"So you mean,
that he wants you to be a queen
and me to be killed?
What a God!"
"I'm doubting now.
Oh, now I see,
He wants us to doubt.
Without doubt
we would have no conscience."
"So you mean,
that Life is both evil and cruel,
and if the cruel things were taken away,
we would have no conscience."
"Sure, that's what I mean.
But I've never thought that thought before.
The dream made me see."
"But God is supposed
only to be good.
He's not supposed to create
evil things."
"He created us once and for all
and gave us possibilities
for being good or evil.
The conscience is created
through our experiences and our dreams."
"So he does not put the dreams into our heads.
We do it ourselves."
"In a way.
Let's say on behalf of God.
I can see him smiling now."
"And I am starving.
I feel better now
maybe because of your good dream.
Thank you, Deena.
You are my best sister!"
"And your only sister!"
She laughed.
"Dreams and Life
are mirroring themselves
in our minds."
"You are my cleverest brother,"
Deena said.
"And the only one you have!"
Mark laughed.
They took each other's
hands, saying,
Thank you, God!"
"You're welcome."
