The Magic Boy VIII

Space

In the city, where Sebastian and Sharon lived, there was a huge observatory. It was situated on the highest point in the city, and a narrow path through a lot of shrubs was the only way to go there. Even the scientists working there had to walk up that path.

Normally it was forbidden area, but Sharon’s father knew one of the astronomers, who worked there. So he had asked him one day, if Sebastian and Sharon could pay the observatory a visit. And luckily he had agreed, but with some conditions.

“I hope they are sweet and nice children.”

“They are, “Sharon’s dad said. “The sweetest in the city.”

“All parents say that.”

“Yeah. But in this case it’s right. But you have to be prepared for a lot of questions.”

“Good.”

“And if you can’t answer their questions, they’ll quarrel.”

“You said they were sweet and nice. But I see, that they’re not polite.”

“They are. They simply expect you to know everything. Can they come Monday – they have a day off that day?”

“That’s OK with me.”

Sebastian and Sharon were on their way uphill through the shrubs.

“How did your dad manage that,” Sebastian asked.

“Don’t know. He must have told him, how kind and friendly we are.”

“But we are not always. We’re too curious, I think.”

“Curiosity is the way to knowledge.”

“You’re right. There’s a lot I want to know about space.”

“Don’t expect him to know everything!”

“He’s a scientist. He must know.”

“It depends on your questions. Nobody knows everything. A few know a little, and more know even less.”

“What a way to put it!”

“It’s the truth. You know that.”

They could see the huge building now. An eye to the space. Marvellous and enigmatic at the same time. They were excited, as they had never seen an observatory before.

“Space is a riddle,” Sharon said. “I don’t understand that there’s more than this world.”

“There is. There’s a world inside you.”

“The subconscious, you mean?”

“That, too. Everything in you is a world of itself, and I admire that world!”

“Proposing again?”

“Maybe. But this inner world reflects the space. It’s cosmic.”

“I don’t feel the planets in my head,” Sharon laughed.

Sebastian laughed, too. “No, but the powers that govern space govern you, too.”

“I don’t think everybody will agree with you.”

“I know. But think it over!”

“I do.”

“You have told me, that we are governed by a lot of powers,” Sebastian said. “But you didn’t tell me where these powers come from.”

“Because I don’t know. But I have a feeling that you know.”

“I don’t. You tell me, that I have done things. But I don’t recall.”

“That’s what I find strange,” Sharon said.

“Do you always know why and how you were doing things?”

“No, but how did you cure my grandma?”

“She was a nice person.”

“How, Sebastian?”

“Honest, I don’t know. Everything went black in me, and suddenly there was a lot of kids in the street.”

“I think I have an explanation.”

“Maybe I don’t want to know.”

“No, of course not. Let’s go to the observatory.”

They were invited in by one of the scientist. “Welcome. We’ll show you .... “

“ ..... the big telescope,” Sebastian said. We do want to have a glance into space. Is that possible?”

“Of course. What do you want to see?”

“The moon,” Sharon said.

“She’s so romantic,” Sebastian said sarcastically. “I want to see Saturn. I was told it was very beautiful.”

Luckily they had two big telescopes, so Sebastian and Sharon sat down and for the first time in their life they saw space, and Sharon could not help saying, “This is beautiful. Space! And there: the moon! I can see the mountains and the shadows. Imagine how quiet the moon is. There’s no sound to be heard. And the whole space is so silent. Earth is the only place with noise.”

Sebastian was sitting at his telescope without saying a word. The sight he saw made him dumb. He saw the colourful rings around the planet and could not believe that anything could be so beautiful. He felt like fainting, everything went black in his mind, and he fell down from the chair.

“What’s wrong,” the scientist said.

“Something is going to happen,” Sharon said. “I don’t know what; we’ll have to wait.”

“What about helping your friend?”

“No, no, there’s nothing wrong with him.”

The scientist went up to the telescope. “What? This can’t be right!”
But it was right. Sebastian was not there anymore. But there was a note on the floor: “Look into the telescope.”

The scientist rushed to the telescope. “There must be something special. A comet or something. I’ve been looking for it for two months now. And then .... “

“And it doesn’t bother you, that Sebastian is not there anymore?”

“He left through the door, didn’t you see that?”

“He didn’t. And how did the note come?”

“I guess he wrote it. I didn’t notice.” He looked though the telescope. Then he said with disappointment, “Nothing. Only the usual thing.”

Sharon was furious. The man was only interested in his own science and did not see what happened around him. Was she the only one to see and partly understand?

She threw the man away and looked in the telescope. Saturn was there with all its rings. So marvellously beautiful. Not strange, that Sebastian fainted. He was sensitive to beauty – and this view was so wonderful, that Sharon could not leave the telescope.

And then: Something happened. Sebastian was there, standing like an angel on the rings, smiling.

“Sebastian,” she called.

“He’s not here, “ the scientist said. “I told you.”

Sharon was thinking some very naughty words, but did not utter them aloud. She could not take her eyes away from her beloved friend. What a smile! And those marvellous eyes! Had he wings? Was he an angel?

Then he disappeared, but some words were spelt letter by letter around the planet: “BLESSED BE YOU AND ALL MANKIND.”

“Oh,” she said. “Now I understand.”

“Can you see the comet?”

Naughty thinking again! Feeling like shouting at him. How stupid could people be? Well, that stupid!

She left the room, went down the stairs and found Sebastian sitting on a stone outside. “Oh, here you are.”

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

“So you have! And what happened?”

“I don’t know. Sharon; take my hand.”

She took his hand with a thousand tears in her eyes.

“Sharon, I’m so happy. I know who I am!”

“So do I.” She fell on her knees.

“Oh no, don’t, Sharon. We’re friends. We’re school mates.”

“Yes, but .... “

“There’s no but. We’re here to show people the right way. But they don’t see now. They will later. Don’t ever forget me!”

“Never. But why do you say so?”

“You’ll understand.”

“Do you remember my dog now?”

“I do.”

“And my legs?”

“I do.”

“And my grandma?”

“She’s a good lady. She has seen!”

“And the children in the park?”

“Children are bearers of the future, if we show them the way.”

“Yes,” she wept.

“And don’t ever forget me!”

“I won’t.”

They got up and went down the path, until they could see the city.

“We’ll meet here to-morrow.”

“Of course.”

“Can you make your mom bake some bread?”

“Sure.”

“Do it, Sharon. For me and the whole world.”

“I will.”

And hand in hand they went down the main street.

Happiness and joy.

Expectation.

Hope.
