In The Park

Sharon could not forget the happening in the street. How could Sebastian make the two men stop their fighting, when he could not recall, what he had done? She was kind of fascinated. There was more to the world, than the eyes could see. They had not seen each other for two days, so she longed for him. He was a riddle, and especially THAT fascinated her. Not knowing each other was important. Only knowing Sebastian a little was THE thing.

At school the girls and the boys were separated. The girls worked in one group on the subject “The cosmic side of the human mind”, while the boys worked in the other end of the building with the subject “War and anxiety.” They had no opportunity to meet, as there were two play grounds.

Sebastian found the subject exciting, especially the part that dealt with anxiety. He and Peter were reading about, what anxiety was, and how one could fight against it or at least cope with it. The two boys discussed very much, as they often disagreed. Peter had the opinion, that anxiety was not a problem at all. “It’s people’s own fault, if they are haunted by fear.” Sebastian found anxiety a hinderness for the personality to develop.

In Sharon’s group they discussed space, creation, and the human mind. Eve and Sharon worked together and agreed partly, that the human mind was a mirror of space in some strange way. Eve was interested in astrology and really believed in it, while Sharon took the philosophical path and ended up with the opinion, that there were powers in Life, which were decisive for human beings. She was fascinated by the old painters like van Gogh, whom she considered very cosmic.

They worked hard the whole school day and were tired when they finally came home. Sharon was lying on her bed, looking at the van Gogh painting she had on her wall. It was “The Night Cafe” and she could not stop looking at his fabulous sky and the way the small street cafe was lit up. She felt that she was there in Southern France on this beautiful place.

But she fell asleep and did not wake up until five o’clock in the afternoon. Her mom called her and asked her to go to the baker’s to get some bread.

“Yoy can’t sleep all day,” she said.

“I’m so tired. We work so hard.”

“I do need bread anyway. Off you go!”

On her way back from the baker’s she saw a piece of white paper fly in the street. Without knowing why, she followed it, but was astonished to see that it clung to her front door, and when she opened the door, the paper flew to her room.

“Shut that door,” mom said. “It’s too windy. I don’t want all this dirty stuff from the street in my house.”

“There’s no wind at all,” Sharon said and put the bread on the kitchen table.

“And the change,” mom said severely.

“Five cent! My goodness!!” Sharon was angry and went upstairs to her room.

And there: the paper was on her door. She grasped for it, but it slipped out of her hands, and when she opened the door, it flew into her room and circled around her head.

What was this? She was a little scared, but tried to catch it anyway. Something was written on it, but she could not clearly see what it was.

Finally she succeeded, held the paper for a second and saw the words: “On our bench at seven.” Then it evaporated and was totally gone.

She sat down on her bed. It could only be Sebastian. Oh, she missed him so much. But how could he do this? He seemed to be able to do almost anything – and without knowing it!

“Dinner,” mom yelled from the kitchen.

Sharon went down and joined the dinner for five minutes. “I have to leave now,” she said. “Eve and I have a lot of homework!”

That was a lie, but dad said, “I’m proud to have a daughter who appreciates school work so much!”

“I love it,” Sharon said and sent him a polite and cute smile. “I love S ...., I mean I love school work.”

“Good. Don’t be home too late.”

“I won’t.“

She walked down the main street towards the park. She longed for seeing Sebastian and looked forward just to have a cozy talk. She was not in the mood for deep and profound conversations. Just holding his hand and have a little small talk. She went into the park in the light from the setting sun and found Sebastian on their bench.

“We haven’t seen each other for two days,” she said.

“I know. That’s why I felt so sad this afternoon.”

Sharon looked into his deep brown eyes. “I fell asleep. Do you know how beautiful you are?”

“Boys can’t be beautiful. They can only be handsome.”

“Then you’re an exception.”

“What would you say if I told you that you are handsome?”

Sharon laughed. “You don’t say!”

“No, I don’t. You’re beautiful.”

“Good, then there are two of us!”

They laughed and talked about school and the work they were doing.

“I’ve gone cleverer these two days,” Sebastian said. “I don’t like wars, but I see, that any human being has powers in him, that can lead to war.”

“I guess so. You have to suppress them.”

“Can you do that?”

“In some situations: yes. But if you’re involved in fightings, you can’t.”

“So you mean, that eternal peace is an illusion or something we dream of.”

“In a way yes. It depends on our destiny.”

“And where does one’s destiny come from?”

“Don’t know. I think everything is predestined.”

“You can’t possibly mean that.”

“I’m only guessing. But that’s the way it looks.”

“So what is your destiny, Sharon?”

“Are you interested in my destiny?”

He took her hand. “I wanna be part of your destiny.”

Oh, her heart was beating. Was it the right time to express her own feelings? Well, carefully then: “Maybe we share destiny, Sebastian.”

Now two hearts were really beating, while the last light from the sun disappeared, and the street-lights were switched on.

They said nothing for a while. A holy moment. Worth a sigh of pure happiness. It was as if Nature understood. A flock of pink birds flew to a tree for the night, and Sharon thought that these birds were exactly Sebastian’s and her feelings.

The noise from the traffic disturbed them, and Sharon suggested, “Why don’t we go deeper into the park?”

“I thought girls were afraid of darkness.”

“Not with a man by their side.”

“A man. Oh Goodness! I don’t want to be a man. I’ll stay a child my whole lifetime.”

“So will I. But destiny wants it otherwise.”

“So we stay. It’s our bench, isn’t it?”

“I guess it belongs to the county.”

They both laughed. And Sebastian said, “It’s our bench whatever the county means.”

I was totally dark now, but they talked and talked, and they both felt, that in some peculiar way they belonged to each other. That it was predestined. Destiny! Their destiny!

The they heard voices from the gate to the park. Apparently kids’ voices, and Sharon said, “This city of ours have poor kids. It’s a shame.”

“It is. Do you think the county knows?”

“No. And if they knew they wouldn’t care anyway.”

“Injustice.”

“Sure.”

“And destiny can’t be like that.”

“It shouldn’t. I pity them very much.”

There was a whole flock of children. They were on their way to find a place to sleep – like the birds in the tree.

The children gathered around Sebastian and Sharon. They started to sing a folk song, and Sharon saw the beauty in their eyes, while Sebastian saw the glowing innocence in the children’s smiles.

This was a marvellous moment.

But with deep surprise Sharon saw Sebastian stand on the bench, saying, “Rich it is to be poor, and poor it is to be rich.”

And the children answered in chorus, “And lovely to be a child!”

Sebastian waved at them, and one by one they came to his place on the bench. And he laid his right hand on the forehead of the first child.

“Can you manage richness and make it spiritual wisdom?”

“Yes,” the children said.

“Well then.” Sebastian said, raising his hands. “Be rich in your clothes and humble in your minds!”

“We will!”

And then: The children’s clothes changed to tuxedoes and they went one by one out of the park.

Sharon was amazed and astonished.

She kissed Sebastian’s cheek. “You are the most handsome and enigmatic person I’ve ever met!”
