Peace On Earth

Per Jespersen

Sebastian’s and Sharon’s class had a rather good day in school. The subjects were interesting, and the teachers were all in a good mood and told them a lot of stories. And they liked it. Nothing was better than to be told a story. It was like being a little kid again, listening to stories from Arabian Nights.

Hearing a story was like dreaming, and dreaming was like a journey into the unknown.

In the break Sebastian and Sharon were talking about dreams.

“Where do they come from,” Sebastian asked.

“Nobody knows. Some say they come from God, and that he sends his messages through the dreams. It is up to us to interpret the dreams in the right way.”

“As Joseph did in Egypt.”

“Sure. But other people believe, that dreams come from the subconscious.”

“And the subconscious could be God.”

“Oh, you make me doubt now. But when I listen to a really good story, it’s like dreaming. Following the story line is like hovering like an eagle over a landscape where everything can happen. It’s like hovering through your own mind. But I should like to fly through your mind, Sebastian.”

“I guess it’s impossible. You can’t come into other people’s minds. It is the intention that we don’t know each other so well. We wouldn’t be able to communicate.”

“That IS strange,” Sharon said. “The less we know of each other’s mind, the better we communicate.”

“Yes, that’s the way it is.”

“But Sebastian – something is going on in your mind. I don’t understand.”

”Neither do I.”

“You must be the one who can understand what is going on in yourself.”

“I don’t think it is like that. Other people understand you and through their behaviour they teach you who you are. If I do things, I don’t understand, you’re the one to tell me, what is going on in me.”

“I can’t. You do something unexplainable, and you want me to explain it. That’s impossible.”

“Maybe everything is unexplainable.”

“Do you remember what you did to my dog?”

“No, not really.”

“It was dead, and you awoke it.”

“Oh!”

Then the bell rang, and they had to go inside.

After school Sebastian and Sharon decided to go to a burger bar to continue their talk, because Sharon kept thinking about the strange things Sebastian had done. Bringing a dog back to life and changing himself into an owl. And he did not seem to know how he did it or even that he did it. It reminded her of a certain person. But she forced herself to think otherwise. There might be a reason. How could a boy be so different from other boys? Was that the reason why she had so warm feelings for him? Thinking back in her life she remembered, that she always liked ghost stories and novels with unhappy endings. Maybe she herself was strange, too.

They were both hungry and ordered three burgers and four big cokes. The bar was almost empty, so they could talk.

“I wonder,” Sharon said.

“So do I – all the time.”

“About what Life is.”

“I think all people do that.”

“I mean: Why are we here? What’s the intention?”

“Intention,” Sebastian said. “It’s a word people cling to. Everything is easier to understand, when you rationalize everything. In this way we go blind.”

“Yes, the biggest part of life is not rational.”

“What about this last burger?”

Sharon laughed. “It will be eaten in a short time, because you’re hungry. A burger is not something magic and unexplainable – but you are!”

“I’m just a nice, kind, and friendly boy. I come from a normal family.”

“But your former life?”

“Don’t you mention that again! I don’t believe in it. It’s impossible to live more than one life.”

“That’s what rationality says.”

“Exactly.”

“And rationality is an illusion. One of the huge mistakes mankind had made.”

Now Sebastian said, “Sharon, you really believe that we are reborn over and over again. That the soul is the same in all these lives.”

“No,” Sharon said. “It’s not like that. It has nothing to do with souls. But I’m not sure, I can explain it. Life is here, and we are all small fragments of this life. It stays the same forever. This explains why many people feel and think the same at the same time, but independent from each other. In this life there are powers that pop up in a few human beings, who change Life.”

“And who makes all this happen?”

“Life.”

“I’m not sure I can follow you.”

“Neither can I. But all the great men and women of the world possess some unexplainable powers, which for some reason have popped up in the people.”

They sat for a while, thinking. Sebastian was going to say something, but a huge group of young people came into the bar. They made such a noise, that Sebastian and Sharon decided to leave.

“Let’s get out of here,” Sharon said. “They spoil over conversation.”

“Sure. Let’s go to our bench in the park. The sun is shining and it is quiet there.”

So they went down the main street with the heavy traffic and headed for the park. Spontaneously Sharon took Sebastian’s hand, and his young heart began to beat. At the end of the street they saw a group of people around two young men fighting. They beat each other as if they were boxers, and some of the youngsters standing around yelled at them, trying to make them beat even harder. It was not unnormal to see such a scene in the city, but Sharon did not like it. “Let’s get away,” she said.

But Sebastian let go of her hand and went up to the two fighting men. He put himself right between them, raised his hand and said with a loud voice, “Peace be with you, and peace be with all of us!”

Sharon stood at the corner, a little frightened.

But the two young men stopped, and she expected them to laugh at Sebastian and beat him. But they did not. They left the scene and disappeared. The people around them gazed at Sebastian, shook their heads and went away.

Then Sebastian went up to Sharon again. “Weren’t we on our way to the park?”

“Well, yes – but you left me to ..... .”

“Did I leave you? I’m sorry. I don’t remember. Let’s go!”

They crossed the street and entered the park. Here they found the bench, which they almost considered theirs and sat down.

“I don’t understand a thing,” Sharon said. “How did you do it?”

“What?”

“Stop the fighting.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The two men fighting in the street.”

“Yeah, I saw them.”

“And you ..... “

“I have no idea. Everything went black in me, but luckily I found you again.”

“But you managed to stop the fighting. They were ready to kill each other.”

“I see.”

Sharon pondered for a while. “Sebastian, do you feel free?”

“Absolutely. Especially when I’m here with you.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“So what do you mean?”

“Do you feel free in your life, at school, at home?”

“Sure. We are all free. When we escape rationality we can catch the freedom.”

“I guess you’re right.”

“Let’s catch it together, Sharon. I think I like you very much.”

“Me too. But you’re unexplainable.”

A flock of ravens landed in a big tree. Those black birds that some people saw as omens.

“I don’t like these birds,” Sharon said.

“Why not. They’re part of Nature.”

“Sure. But the black colour make me freeze.”

He took her hand. “Let’s change it.”

Sharon felt the warmth creep into her body and saw the ravens change to white pigeons and fly away.

“Peace for us all on this Earth,” Sebastian said.

“Peace,” Sharon whispered and gave Sebastian a kiss on his cheek. “I love you, Sebastian.”
