Spirits

Siri was in her room
and did not come down
for dinner.

Mom and Dad
wondered,
why she did not come.
They have called several times,
and Siri answered:
"I don't have time now.
Just save some food
for me."

Several hours passed,
and Mom and Dad
were sitting
watching TV.

"What is she doing,"
Dad asked.

"I guess,
she's doing her homework.
You know,
they often have
a lot of homework
to do."

But Dad was sceptic.
"I don't think so.
She's doing something else."

"Boys, you mean?"

"No way,
that's not Siri.
She's working.
I'll go see her."

Dad got up and went
to Siri's room.
He knocked the door
and asked,
"What are you doing, Siri?"

"Writing."

"Writing what?"

"Well, that's a secret."

"Can't I come in?"

Siri opened the door
and let her Dad in.
And he got surprised.
The whole room
was filled up
with papers,
some of them hand written,
and some of them printed
from the computer.

"What are you doing,"
he asked.

"As you see: writing."

"Homework?"

"Oh no,
it's all made.
I'm writing a novel."

"What? You a novel?"

"Sure, why not?"

"Well, you are only
twelve years old.
You can't write
a novel."

"I sure can.
And I have to."

"What do you mean: have to.
What do you have to write?"

"I have to write
about my experiences
with the spirits
in this house."

"What?
Are you crazy?"

"No, I'm not.
I know about spirits,
and I feel,
that I have to write
about them.
It can be a help
for other people.
I want to be a writer."

Dad sat down, amazed.
His daughter wanted
to be a writer.
"You once told me,
that you wanted to be
a nurse."

"Once upon a time, yes.
But not any more.
I have a task to do."

"Are you serious?"

"Very much so.
Haven't you seen,
that people are growing
more and more selfish?"

"Sure."

"That's because
they don't listen to
the spirits.
There are good spirits
and evil spirits.
You have to learn to listen
to the good ones."

"There's no such thing
as spirits."

"Oh yes, there is.
I have talked to them,
and they told me things,
I didn't imagine.
I write what they
tell me to write."

"I'm astonished!
Spirits!"

"Dad, you are blind.
They are everywhere –
in your thoughts
and in your dreams.
But you don't listen to them!"

"No, because
I haven't seen them.
They don't exist!"

"Dad."
She took his hand.
"Dad, they are there,
and they are ruling
our lives,
and it seems
that the evil spirits
are most listened to
these days.
They are trying
to make us selfish,
so that we don't care
about anything
but ourselves.
This is bad for the future."

"And your novel.
How is it?"

"It's very exciting.
So exciting,
that I can't sleep.
I often write the whole night through."

"Listen," Dad said.
"Good and evil,
that's up to us
and not to spirits.
We have to choose!"

"You can't choose anything
without help
from the spirits.
It's an illusion
to think that way."

"No, we are individuals
with our own
independent life.
Spirits are illusions.
Who told you all this?"

"I was told to do
something to stop
the selfishness
in the human world."

"Told by whom?"

"Guess!"

"I don't know.
Some crazy teacher
of yours."

"Oh, how blind you are, Dad!
The spirits told me.
Read my novel,
when I have finished
and be cleverer."

"Who told you
to make me cleverer?"

"The spirits!!!!!!!!"
