Leo Tolstoy
1828-1910
Leo Tolstoy was born at the family estate Yasnaya
Polyana. He was educated privately and at
the university of Kazan. He studied law, but did not take a degree.
Later he went to Caucasus with his brother. Here he joined an artillery regiment and also
began
to write books. He joined a war and took part in the defence of Sevastopol.
After 1856 he visited Great Britain. When he came home he married Sophie Behrs and had
13 children with her. Newly married he settled at his estate near Volga. Here he wrote his
most famous novel "War and Peace". Later he wrote "Anna Karenina",
1974.
His view on Christianity ended in ascetism as a means against the evil. He saw worship of
Jesus as blasphemy, as God's world is within every human being. Therefore, he was
thrown out of The Russian Orthodox Church.
Later he gave his whole fortune to his wife and
lived very poorly as a peasant at the
estate. Later he left the place, took ill and died on a remote station in Astapovo. Before
that
he had founded a school at Yasnaya Polyana, which became a place of pilgrimage.
