A Sunday Morning

af  Per Jespersen

It was a quiet Sunday morning in the small village Snowdon. John and Luke, who were neighbours, were sitting on a bench on the small square in the warm sunshine. They had had their breakfast in the house, in which Luke was living, as they had spent the night together. They often did that in the week-ends, because they loved to play the games on the computer, but they also loved to play football, so they were a little tired this morning. But they enjoyed to be together, and they enjoyed to talk about everything.

This morning they talked about football, as they had played a game on Luke’s computer, which they had downloaded from the internet.

“How can a man create such a game,” Luke said.

“I do not know. He must be a clever man and make a lot of money.”

“I will make a lot of money, too. But not now. Not before I grow up.”

“And what will you do, Luke? What kind of work do you want?”

“I want to be an engineer. Or I want to be the director of a big company.”

“Oh, you have your dreams,” John said.

“And what is your dream,” Luke answered.

“Promise, that you will not laugh at me!”

“Oh no, I will not.”

“I want to be a designer of clothing.”

“Oh, my God! Can you do that?”

“I think so. There are schools, on which you can learn to design.”

“And what about football?”

“Well, you cannot make a living out of that, can you?”

“Only when you are professional.”

“And we are not professionals. We both know that.”

Now people started to show up. All shops were closed except the baker’s shop. People went there to buy bread and rolls for their breakfast. They all enjoyed the morning sun, and some of them sat down on the benches in the nearby park.

“Look there,” John said. “There is Ann.”

Ann was their schoolmate, and she did not live far from their street. They both liked her and greeted her.

“Hello, Ann!”

“Oh, good morning,” she cried. “I am in a hurry.”

She went into the baker’s shop and took her bicycle and rushed home.

“See you later,” she waved.

In that very moment an old lady crossed the street. It was difficult for her to walk, as she had a stick in her left hand. In the same moment as she was in the middle of the street, a car came in full speed round the corner.

“Be careful,” Luke shouted.

“I am,” the lady shouted back. But the driver of the car had not seen her. He tried to stop his car, but he did not succeed. He hit the lady, who fell in the street, while her stick flew into the baker’s window.

The two boys rushed up to her to help her. Luke took her in his strong hands and pushed her away, while John stopped the traffic.

“Is she safe,” he shouted.

“Oh yes, but you have to call an ambulance.”

“I will do that.“ He took his cell phone and dialled 112.

A few minutes later they heard the ambulance coming down the main street. Luke tried to talk to the old woman. “We have called an ambulance,” he whispered.”

“How nice of you! I am just too old and too clumsy.”

“No, you are not. This could happen for all of us.”

“Oh, you just say that to be nice to me.”

“No, I mean it. When you come home again, we will go to the baker’s for you every Sunday morning.”

Now the ambulance came, and the driver came out to take a look. “Good boys,” he said. He took the old lady’s hand and made her sit up. “Are you OK?”

“Oh yes,“ the old lady said. “I am just clumsy. You cannot cure that, can you?”

“No, I am afraid not,” the driver said.

“But I met two angels,” the old lady laughed. “These two boys are so nice.” She took her purse and gave both John and Luke a ten pound note. “This is for you. Will you please follow me home?”

“Of course,” Luke said. “And we will come every Sunday morning to see what you want.”

The driver smiled and drove his ambulance back to the hospital.
